USA Science & Engineering Festival in DC

    posted Apr 30, 2012, 8:34 AM by Bradley Lands   [ updated Apr 30, 2012, 8:40 AM ]

I was lucky enough to attend the USA Science & Engineering Festival in Washington D.C. this past weekend. The Finale Expo of the second USA Science & Engineering Festival, hosted by Lockheed Martin, featured more than 3,000 fun, interactive exhibits, 100 stage shows, and a book fair including 40 best-selling science authors. Check out my video that I created of the event!

The festival was designed to inspire and motivate students to pursue an interest in STEM (science technology engineering mathematics). The hope is that the festival will help to get students excited to work in STEM related jobs when they grow up in order to protect our nation's security, to remain competitive in the global economy, and to solve the challenging problems of tomorrow.

Students in my 6th Grade TECH class recently finished up their catapult projects.  In order to collect their data on their catapult launches, they used the Video Physics application on their iPod Touches.  They used this App to record video, collect data, and analyze their data.  Then they used iMovie on the iPod Touches to create a video of their data analysis.

Students use the Bridge Basher App on their iPod touches to test their bridge designs before they build their bridge from balsa wood. Did I mention that the video was filmed, edited, and uploaded to YouTube all from my iPod Touch? Pretty cool!

The staff of Mary Ellen Henderson's channel 14, and their sponsor Bradley Lands, paid a visit to the Falls Church Community Television studios at George Mason High School this week. FCC-TV supervisor Michael Palmrose (right) and Lands have been exploring ways to expand the integration of video technology in the classroom.

The students currently produce the daily MEH morning announcements that is played throughout the school at 7:30 a.m. and archived later in the day on YouTube.
